Smart Lights for Smart Homes

Welcome to Tech Talk with Doug! Today we are talking about smart lighting technology.

There are a couple ways to get into the smart light technology in your home. The first is by changing out individual light bulbs. This is fast and easy. You simply change out the lights. While you can control the lights from your smart phone or other device, you also have to turn each individual light off.

The other option is to change out the light switch. By changing out the light switch, you can control the lighting in any room , but this option may require some wiring. There is a smart hub to install with the light switch which allows you to control the switch from your mobile device as well.

Besides smart lights being cool, why are they beneficial? One reason is to install them for your home theater. You can dim the lights with the touch of a button, but the other reason is safety. You can have lights on a timer while you are on vacation or turn the lights on as you come home if you are alone.

There are many great upsides!

What is a Smart Home?

Today we are going to talk about one of the biggest trends in home technology- Smart Homes! A lot of people are going towards having smart home technology installed and it can be a lot of fun.

Smart homes incorporate voice controlled devices, as well as apps to control different areas of your home and they usually communicate with each other. There are security camera’s that let you monitor activity at home right from your phone. You can also program your thermostat to control the heat while you are away and app to control the lights.

With all of the choices out there, we recommend is to buy brand name when purchasing a smart home device. The brand name devices typically work well with each other.

If you have questions about making your home a “smart home”, we’d love to hear from you.

What is an OLED TV?

What is an OLED TV? That is a great question. There is a lot of buzz out there right now surrounding new technology in televisions and the OLED TV’s are the talk of the town.

OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode. What does that mean? It means each pixel on the TV is creating it’s own light giving you a spectacular picture. LG is currently the only one making the OLED tv ‘s at the moment and this is what they have to say, “The individually illuminating OLED pixels can brighten, dim and power off fully to achieve perfect black. That means contrast—the ratio between the lightest and darkest areas of the screen—is truly infinite. Perfect black is essential to a more lifelike image as well as the great shadow detail you can only get with OLED.”

With our LCD or LED TV’s, the light comes from the back. The OLED tv’s create the light themselves. It gives you perfect black levels and give you an astounding picture.
If you are looking to stay ahead of the technology curve and don’t mind spending some dough, the OLED TV’s are currently the best technology you can buy on the market!

Should I buy a 4K TV?

Last week, we received the question “Should I buy a 4K TV?” While 4K Televisions have been out on the market for a while, many haven’t taken the leap the to purchase one because many of the cable channels can’t support the technology yet.  If you are in the market for a new television, why not look at buying a 4K Tv.  You don’t need to worry about cable television channels catching up, when there are plenty of streaming stations to choose from like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and more.

So why should you purchase a 4K TV? The new 4K TV’s give you double the resolution of your normal TV, which translates to a higher quality picture.

Are Subwoofers Necessary For My Home Theater?

In this week’s Tech Talk With Doug, let’s talk about whether or not subwoffers are necessary for your home theater system.   In the past, many people had large box speakers that would sit on the floor.  The large speakers were great because the enclosure enhanced the low end sound of your TV.   Fast forward a few years and most of our speakers are now much smaller.  Even though your soundbar or speakers may produce an impressive sound, they won’t be able to deliver the low frequency sounds that a subwoofer can.

What is a subwoofer?
A subwoofer is a speaker designed to produce very low bass frequencies sounds. At these low frequencies, the sounds can be felt, as well as, heard. In addition to filling in the low frequencies your other speakers may not, the subwoofers can also provide a powerful rumble for your next movie night.

Still not sure what a subwoofer does or how you can benefit from one? We’d love to hear from you.

How Do You Get Free HDTV With an Antenna?

In this episode of Tech Talk With Doug, we answer the question “How do you get free HDTV with an antenna?”

You can get several free HDTV channels by installing an antenna in your home. The best placement for your new antenna is on your roof or in the attic. With the antenna installed, run the line to the main distribution line that feeds to all of the televisions in your home. Once the antenna is installed and the lines are connected, you should be able to view HDTV!

There are a couple of things to figure out before installing your cable:

  • Where will you get the best reception – inside or outside your home?
  • What channels are available for free in your area?  You can search websites like TV Fool or AntennaWeb to get started.
  • What type of antenna should you purchase? They aren’t all the same, so make sure to do your research!
  • Be careful as you head up on the roof or into the attic. This isn’t a project everyone can handle – if you’re unsure it may be something you want to get outside help for.

If you feel like you need some additional information about installing the antenna, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to help.
